E' una pianta erbacea tipica della Cina e India, dal tubero si estrae la polvere giallo arancio, che si utilizza sia per tingere manufatti tessili, che per uso alimentare; CEE E 100 Il giallo che si ottiene è di un bel colore e veniva utilizzato fin dai tempi antichi nelle tintorie; per questa proprietà veniva venduto al posto dello zafferano.

Turmeric is a herbaceous plant native to India and China. Its powderized rhyzomes yield a yellow- orange pigment that is used both as a textile dye and for food coloring (E 100 in the European classification). It was already well known for its rich yellow hue in ancient times, as as such often sold in place of saffron.
